Which formats keep transparency
Transparency lives in an alpha channel, and only some formats store one. PNG is the safe choice: lossless and supported everywhere. WebP also keeps transparency and makes smaller files, which suits websites. JPEG has no alpha channel, so a JPEG export always gets a solid background.

How to make the background transparent
